35 Years Ago, Dragon Ball Z Redefined Shonen With The Greatest Transformation of All Time

Even after several decades since its debut, no other Shonen has ever come close to the influence Dragon Ball has created. The original manga, written and illustrated by the legendary Akira Toriyama serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from 1984 to 1995, before returning with several sequels and spin-offs. Additionally, Toei Animation released the anime adaptation in two parts, with Dragon Ball Z featuring the second, much longer half of the story. While the original anime sets up the foundation of the story, its global impact and influence can’t come close to Dragon Ball Z, which helped popularize the franchise. Over the four decades of the franchise’s legacy, fans have been introduced to several series and more than a dozen films, with each of them being as exciting and thrilling as one would expect from Dragon Ball.

However, even among all the series and films, the hype and sheer intensity of Dragon Ball Z still remain unmatched. The story takes place after a brief time skip, where Goku is living a peaceful life with his wife Chi-Chi and four-year-old son, Gohan. However, trouble always seems to find him since his peaceful days are short-lived when Saiyans, a warrior race from a faraway planet, come looking for him. Goku learns about his origins and the reason he was sent to Earth, but naturally, he chooses to protect the planet he grew up on. Following the introduction of the Saiyans, Goku taps into his true potential and unlocks a Super Saiyan transformation that remains iconic to this day.

Dragon Ball Z Aired Its First Super Saiyan Transformation 35 Years Ago

Goku transformed into a Super Saiyan for the first time in Episode 95, titled Transformed at Last. The episode was originally broadcast in Japan on June 12th, 1991, before making its debut in the U.S. in October 1998. He transformed out of pure rage and frustration over not being able to protect those close to him. His willpower allowed him to take on a form that was so immensely powerful that even the galactic tyrant Frieza couldn’t help but cower in fear. It wasn’t simply a power-up, but a culmination of Goku’s journey. Without even realizing it, he rewrote history by reviving the legendary form that the Saiyans had but forgotten.

Toriyama introduced this legendary transformation in DBZ and only continued to take it one level higher over the decades. After Goku, other Saiyans such as Vegeta, Gohan, and Trunks began transforming and leveling up their game in difficult battles. Whether it’s Daima or Super, the franchise has included several variations of the Super Saiyan transformations, and it all began with that unforgettable moment 35 years ago.

It changed the Shonen demographic forever, and transformations became a staple in the industry. While Toriyama didn’t introduce the concept of transformations, he showed everyone how it’s done, inspiring countless mangakas to follow in his footsteps. Several tropes introduced by Toriyama have continued to inspire new mangaka for over four decades, but transformations remain the most famous of them all.

Dragon Ball Z  Is Still The Best Series of The Franchise

It’s not just the transformations, but DBZ shaped the franchise’s future by blending emotional storytelling and redefining the enemies-to-allies trope and the rivalries. The story highlights the passage of time following the lives of our beloved characters as they grow older, stronger, and take responsibility for their families.

Whether it’s Piccolo’s journey from Goku’s enemy to his son’s mentor or Vegeta’s path to seeking atonement, the series adds the emotional weight that leaves long-lasting impressions on fans. DBZ is only split into four major sagas, and that’s enough to pave the franchise’s legacy. Even Daima and Super take place after the events of the original story, but aren’t nearly as beloved as this classic gem.

The transformations change significantly in Dragon Ball Super and Daima, but the roots can always be traced back to DBZ. The story was never the same after Goku’s first Super Saiyan transformation, as the power level of the universe expanded on a massive scale. The characters reached new heights of power that they never thought were possible, all the while facing even more dangerous enemies.
