The DC Universe is building a strong sequence of successes, with Creature Commandos, Superman, and the second season of Peacemaker earning acclaim from critics and audiences alike. The animated Creature Commandos kicked off the new era with a story praised for its humor, action, and emotional character arcs. This was followed by the box office success of Superman, which has grossed over $614 million worldwide and is projected to bring in a theatrical profit of $125 million for DC Studios. Currently, the second season of Peacemaker is streamlining the canon of the new universe, repositioning its characters as major players in the fresh continuity. Plus, while only half the season has been released so far, the future for the 11th Street Kids already appears secure, as DC Studios head James Gunn has confirmed plans for two of its most popular characters.
“Oh yeah,” Gunn confirmed on social media when a fan asked about immediate plans for Peacemaker (John Cena) and Vigilante (Freddie Stroma) following the conclusion of Season 2. Gunn’s direct response suggests the two antiheroes are already factored into a DCU project currently in development. This could mean a third season of Peacemaker is on the horizon, or the characters could have significant roles in the forthcoming Waller television series. An appearance in a theatrical film like Man of Tomorrow, the Superman sequel that Gunn has already finished writing, is also a possibility, considering Peacemaker’s cameo in Superman.

It is worth noting that a vision of the future depicted in Creature Commandos showed the corpses of both Peacemaker and Vigilante alongside fallen Justice League members like Superman and Wonder Woman. This hinted that Gunn may be setting the duo on a more heroic path that will see them fighting alongside DC’s premier heroes.
After Peacemaker, the DCU Will Keep Expanding

The future of the DC Universe extends far beyond the exploits of its more irreverent characters, with a full slate of interconnected films and television shows poised to build out the new continuity. Following the success of Superman, a direct follow-up titled Man of Tomorrow is already scheduled for release on July 9, 2027. The film will focus on an uneasy alliance between Superman and Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) against a larger threat — that we sincerely hope is Brainiac. Before that, the DCU will expand its mythology with Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock, which is set to hit theaters on June 26, 2026. This film will adapt the acclaimed Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic series.
DC Studios is also committed to diversifying its output with projects of varying tones and scales. Arriving on September 11, 2026, is Clayface, an R-rated horror film centered on the classic Batman villain that is packed with nods to the bigger DCU. DC Studios’ multi-platform strategy also includes several ambitious series for HBO. Among them is Lanterns, an eight-episode series that is described as a True Detective-style mystery following Green Lanterns Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre). Additionally, several other projects are in various stages of development without confirmed release dates, including movies based on Swamp Thing, Batman’s The Brave and the Bold, and a new Wonder Woman film.
New episodes of Peacemaker premiere on HBO Max on Thursdays.
