WIT Studio is one of the most renowned animation studios in the industry, known for several acclaimed anime. The studio reached unprecedented heights of popularity ever since the debut of Attack on Titan in 2013. However, having been given a tight schedule to adapt the manga after the time-skip, the studio had to step back from the project since they couldn’t meet the deadline. While WIT Studio followed the main characters since the beginning of their journey, MAPPA covered all the events that took place after the time-skip and concluded the story. However, while Attack on Titan remains the studio’s most popular work, WIT Studio is known for actively releasing original anime series.
Usually, anime based on original stories don’t have the same demand as a popular Shonen series, but that doesn’t stop the studio from delivering some of the greatest anime of all time. Whether it’s the sci-fi anime Vivy -Fluorite Eye’s Song- or the mystery series Great Pretender, the studio has unique stories across all genres. This time, WIT Studio will be releasing another sci-fi anime scheduled for 2027. Titled LONA, short for Laboratory of Optics and Neural Analysis, the anime shared its first teaser PV along with the plot and the staff members.
What Is LONA About?
The anime is set in a not-so-distant future, following researchers as they confront their broken world by connecting with the unresolved emotions left behind by those who died years ago. Since the world is facing a threat of being attacked by humans who should be dead, the government has decided to request LONA, a specialized organization to deal with the situation.
The story centers around Researcher Ao and her apprentice Sango as they try to solve the mystery by understanding the brains of the dead. They chase answers about the emotions of those deceased and what they left behind when they died.
The anime will be directed by Takashi Katagiri, known for Spy x Family Code: White, the film based on an original story centering around the beloved characters from the manga. Additionally, Akiko Nogi, known for beloved titles such as Unnatural, MIU404, and The Last Mile, provides the original story of LONA. The character designer is Posuka Demizu, a renowned manga illustrator who worked on The Promised Neverland, one of the greatest Shonen Jump series of all time.
What’s Next For WIT Studio?

While fans await more updates on the anime, WIT Studio will be returning with new surprises in July this year. The studio is holding a collaborative panel at this year’s Anime Expo with Production I.G., the same studio behind the beloved sports drama Haikyu!! Tetsuro Araki, the director of the first three seasons of Attack on Titan, will be making an appearance.
Additionally, Mitsuhisa Ishikawa (founder and chairman of Production I.G), George Wada (president and CEO of both I.G and WIT STUDIO), and Tetsuya Nakatake (co-founder and producer of WIT STUDIO) will also be in attendance. This year’s convention will be held from July 2nd to July 5th, and the studios will be holding their panel on the third day of the event. Fans can expect new updates on the upcoming shows and projects, including One Piece‘s remake.
