2026 has been one of the greatest years for anime fans, with exciting new series and film releases. The year is only halfway over, and fans have already been treated to some of the best anime in recent years. Unfortunately, not all of them received the attention they deserved despite having a unique premise and exceptional animation. This also includes the All You Need Is Kill anime film, which was released in the theatres this January. While the film wasn’t a major box office disappointment, it also couldn’t be considered one of the biggest hits of the year. It’s based on the same novel that inspired the 2014 film Edge of Tomorrow starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. The novel, written by Hiroshi Sakurazaka and Yoshitoshi Abe, follows a soldier dying on a battlefield only to find that he wakes up earlier in the day before realizing he’s stuck in a time loop.

The official website of GKIDS confirmed its Blu-ray DVD will be released on July 7th, 2026. More information on the Blu-ray has been shared on the website, including the link to pre-order it before the official release. Just like most Blu-ray DVD sets, this one also comes with its range of bonus content, including scene breakdowns, storyboards with director commentary, pre-screening discussion from the director and staff, art gallery, and more. The film is also streaming on Prime Video, so don’t forget to check it out.

While the film is based on the same novel, it focuses on a different angle from the Edge of Tomorrow film. While the Hollywood film is a more faithful adaptation of the novel, the anime film is set primarily in Japan, focusing on a different protagonist since Keiji Kiriya got most of the attention in the original work before crossing paths with Rita, who was also in a time loop. Following the outer space invasion of an unidentified plant, Rita finds herself in a time loop after dying.

She is forced to relive the same day over and over again. With each loop, she learns something new and begins to fight to escape the horrible fate. While she is determined to use her memories and the time loop to her advantage, the endless cycle of death and solitude slowly wears her down. Just when she was on the brink, she meets Keiji, who is stuck in the same conundrum as her. Together, the two lost souls join hands to change their fates.

Ahead of its premiere, the film was selected as one of the Midnight Specials for the upcoming Annecy International Animation Film Festival. That was the first real showcase for the film for fans in attendance, and it finally landed in the theatres in January this year. The film highlights the mental struggles of the protagonist as she suffers through the brutal loop of dying over and over again without being able to escape the endless cycle.

To make matters worse, her solitude pushes her to the brink before she finally meets someone who shares the same pain as her. While the film is different from the source material, it shares a refreshing new insight into the story through another character’s lens.
