Kenta Shinohara’s Weekly Shonen Jump fantasy, Witch Watch, is the best magical series in the magazine currently. The manga began serialization in February 2021 and released its anime adaptation in April last year as part of the Spring 2025 lineup. While the anime wasn’t one of the year’s biggest hits, such as Solo Leveling and Dandadan, it gathered a large enough fan base to get renewed for a second season right away. Fans immediately fell in love with the heartwarming story, comedic elements, and, of course, gorgeous animation. The manga is currently serializing its Part 3, and no details on its ending have been confirmed yet.
While fans await the anime’s return, the official website of GKIDS confirms the Blu-ray DVD is available for pre-order ahead of its release on July 14th, 2026. It was released in Japan a while ago, and fans in North America can finally get the home video release. Just like a standard set, the Blu-ray comes with special bonuses including director and cast interviews, an advanced screening documentary, and more.
What Is the Plot of Witch Watch?

Witches, ogres, tengus, vampires, and werewolves, this series has everything you can expect from a fantasy story and more. Morihito Otogi is a seemingly ordinary high school student who hides his identity as an ogre. However, because he was different from other children, he was often bullied but refused to fight back since he could end up seriously hurting them with his exceptional strength.
The story begins when he learns about the return of Nico Wakatsuki, his childhood friend and a young witch who spent several years training to become stronger in the Holy Land of Witches. However, he is shocked to learn that their parents have not only set an arrangement for them to live together, but he is also expected to serve as her familiar.
Although ogres used to be famous as familiars during ancient times, it’s not that common in the modern era. Despite being initially hesitant to become a familiar, Morihito eventually agrees after learning that Nico’s life is in grave danger.
What Makes Witch Watch Special?

This refreshing series is set in a modern world where mythological and fantasy creatures have evolved and learned to live among humans. As the story continues, Nico and Morihito meet more friends with unique traits who somehow end up sharing the same roof as them while protecting Nico from several threats. The anime is a hilarious action comedy that surprisingly focuses on character development.
Despite the heavy themes, the intensity of the story is easily overshadowed by the shenanigans of Nico and her friends, especially Nico, who turns every situation into a disaster with her magic. The series is episodic in nature, focusing on unique challenges for the characters while also pushing forward the story towards finding out the reason Nico’s life is in danger.
The anime released 25 episodes in two cours and is currently streaming on Crunchyroll. Additionally, you can also catch up with the manga on the official app of Manga Plus or read and buy the physical and digital copies of the volumes on Viz Media’s website.
