For nearly four decades, Mel Brooks’ sci-fi parody Spaceballs has remained a beloved cult classic. The 1987 film expertly skewered the original Star Wars trilogy with an unforgettable cast of characters, including the heroic Lone Starr (Bill Pullman), the villainous Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis), and the wise Yogurt (Mel Brooks himself). However, despite a memorable joke in the movie itself teasing Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money, the franchise has remained largely dormant, save for a short-lived animated series. After years of rumors and false starts, Amazon MGM Studios officially put a sequel into development, promising to recapture the magic of the original while setting its sights on a whole new era of galactic adventures.

“I can’t believe it’s actually happening,” Spaceballs 2 writer and star Josh Gad told Collider, confirming the project has just passed a major milestone. “I pitched it to Mel Brooks three years ago. The fact that we are at the end of pre-production… You’re the first person I’m telling this to: I’m leaving TIFF to fly to Australia to start shooting the movie.” The confirmation that cameras are set to roll this month elevates the sequel into a tangible production, officially signaling that the Schwartz is awakening down under.

“We’re always hypersensitive to [leaks] and aware of it,” Gad added, before revealing some new details about the plot. “We’re going to do, I would say, an even mix that would probably represent what Mel did on the first film. Because it is a Star Wars-esque film, it requires some Vista shots, which we’re doing, and it requires some spaceship shots, which we’re doing.”

Spaceballs 2 Will Tackle the Sequel Era of Star Wars

Just as the first film perfectly lampooned the original Star Wars trilogy, Spaceballs 2 is setting its sights on the modern franchise, as the central narrative appears to be a direct parody of the sequel trilogy’s “passing the torch” theme. According to recent reports, Lewis Pullman, son of original star Bill Pullman, is in talks to join the cast as Starburst, the son of Lone Starr and Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga). He will be joined by Keke Palmer in a leading role named Destiny, with reports indicating that these two new characters will be the focus of the adventure. This generational shift directly mirrors the introduction of Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which took place 30 years after Return of the Jedi.

The confirmation that Bill Pullman is reprising his role as Lone Starr alongside Moranis as Dark Helmet and Brooks as Yogurt sets the stage for these legacy characters to interact with the new heroes, much like Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), and Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) served as mentors in the recent Star Wars films. The return of more familiar faces is also on the table, as Star Trek: Voyager actor Tim Russ, who played one of the troopers in the original, teased his involvement with a social media post referencing his classic “combing the desert” scene. This blend of old and new is further highlighted by the project’s cheeky description as “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two – but with Reboot Elements – Franchise Expansion Film,” proving that no aspect of modern sequel-making is safe from the Schwartz.

Spaceballs 2 is eyeing a theatrical release in 2027.
