A new Sega game recently released is one of the best games of 2025. Right now, the highest-rated 2025 game, on Metacritic, for those who do not know, is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 with a 93 on Metacritic. The rest of the top ten, in order, is Blue Prince with a 92, Split Fiction with a 91, Donkey Kong Bananza with a 91, Despelote with an 89, Death Stranding 2 with an 89, Abiotic Factor with an 88, Kingdom Come Delivrance 2 with an 88, Monster Hunter Wilds with an 88, and Sword of the Sea with an 88. This new Sega game is one spot outside the top 10, currently the 11th highest-rated new game of 2025, thanks to an 87 on Metacritic. And it is flying under the radar of some.
The new Sega game was not developed by Sega but published by Sega, and that is the game Shinobi: Art of Vengeance, which was made by Lizardcube. For those who do not recognize the latter, they are the French studio responsible for 2017’s Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap and 2020’s Streets of Rage 4. Shinobi: Art of Vengeance is their junior release, and continues the studio’s streak of no misses.
About the Game
Shinobi: Art of Vengeance is a 2D action platformer with, as our review of the game notes, a stunning and striking hand-drawn look. In it, you play as the legendary Shinobi Joe Musashi on a quest for vengeance after your village was burned to the ground and your entire clan slaughtered. Of course, as a 2D action platformer, the story is simply a vehicle for progression. The star is the gameplay, which has been the big positive talking point of many reviews of the game.
While this release is new, Shinobi is a series that dates all the way back to 1987. And with this new release, it is now a 13-game series. While Shinobi has been around for a while, it’s been a fairly niche series the entire time. The best evidence of this is that it’s only sold about five million copies to date. Still, like many long-running niche series, it has some hardcore fans, some of whom have not loved the new release for its differences compared to older classics in the series.
Those interested in the new Sega game can find it for $29.99 on the following platforms: Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5 Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. Once downloaded, you should expect to sit down with the new Shinobi release for about 15 hours if you include side content.
All of that said, and as always, feel free to leave a comment letting us know what you think. Meanwhile, if you are after more classic Sega games rather than modern Sega games, then you may want to subscribe to Xbox Game Pass, which just added one of the great classic Sega CD games.
