Isekai is one of the most popular genres in the anime industry, but most of these are action fantasies. It’s a common trope for the protagonist to be reincarnated or transmigrated in a fantasy world with supernatural powers as they start their lives anew. However, while these tropes are often the face of the genre, isekai is way more vast and complex than that. With the anime industry exponentially expanding every year, more unique tropes and plotlines are being introduced. Studio Madhouse, which was established in 1972, remains one of the leading companies that adapts a variety of anime series and films focusing on all kinds of genres using different and unique art styles.
While Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is the studio’s most popular anime of the 2020s, it has also helped produce acclaimed shows such as Parasyte: The Maxin, Death Note, Hunter x Hunter, and more. While many of Madhouse’s greatest hits are well-known among fans, there are a handful that aren’t as widely recognized. This also includes Sonny Boy, based on an original story, which premiered on July 16th, 2026. This 12-episode-long series remains one of the greatest isekai of all time, even if it doesn’t get the recognition it deserves.
What Is Sonny Boy About?

This short anime is written and directed by Shingo Natsume, best known for the acclaimed series Space Dandy. Natsume even created the storyboards for half the episodes and had Shinichirō Watanabe, one of the most legendary directors, as a musical advisor for the series, as he introduced artists and bands to Natsume. The series gained recognition across the country after receiving the Excellence Award in the animation category at the 25th Japan Media Arts Festival.
The anime features mind-bending narratives, surreal visuals, and shows that challenge the boundaries of reality. It centers around a group of 36 middle school students, including Nagara, Nozomi, and Mizuho, who are transported to a dimension known as “This World.” This mysterious world has its own set of rules, and the students discover they can now use unique supernatural abilities. As the truth about the world and the transportation comes to light, the students confront various challenges and conflicts while figuring out a way to return home.
This mind-bending anime is a deep dive into the psychological workings of its characters, as it embraces an unconventional story structure. The primary focus shifts part of the way through. The story also leans into scientific and philosophical concepts that viewers will find the need to wrap their heads around. Instead of spoon-feeding the messages and themes, the story takes the viewers on a unique journey without over-explaining its allegorical nature.
