Even after several decades, there’s something undeniably special and nostalgic about the 1990s anime and manga series. The aesthetic appeal and the slightly grainy visuals have slowly been forgotten over the years. This also makes those 1990s series even more special, even if they aren’t as famous now as they used to be. The Shonen demographic has dominated the industry for quite a few decades, yet no era was as phenomenal as the 1900s. It doesn’t just include battle Shonen such as One Piece and Dragon Ball Z, but the demographic was far wider than that. Written and illustrated by Tooru Fujisawa, GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka, a comedy series, began serialization in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine in 1996 and concluded its epic story in 2002.

The manga won the 22nd Kodansha Manga Award in the Shounen category in 1998, further establishing itself as one of the greatest Shounen classics of all time. Studio Pierrot released an anime adaptation in 1999, but didn’t adapt the manga fully. While the series doesn’t have a wide fanbase in the West, it’s still loved among Japanese fans, which is why it’s not rare to see the story get live-action revivals. The new live-action series will premiere in Japan on July 20th, 2026, but no information on an international release has been confirmed so far. A trailer has been revealed, introducing the main characters and premise of the story.

What Is Great Teacher Onizuka About?

The story centers around Eikichi Onizuka, a 22-year-old ex-gang member who sets out to become a teacher to be popular with schoolgirls. However, even if he began his teaching career for the wrong reasons, he soon develops a conscience and does everything he can to help his students.

His skills as a teacher are put to the test after landing a job as the homeroom teacher of Class 3-4 at the prestigious Holy Forest Academy. The students are known for mentally breaking their new homeroom teachers, forcing them to quit their jobs. However, it will take a lot more than that to break Onizuka’s spirit since he is used to dealing with delinquents during his days as a s gang member.

Slowly but surely, he gets to learn more about each of the students and the problems they face, including bullying, suicidal attempts, sexual harassment, and more. With his unpredictable and unconventional methods, he supports his students and makes school as enjoyable for them as he possibly can.

What Does This Update Mean For GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka‘s Future?

Although considered a shonen, the series comes off more as a seinen thanks to its mature themes. The anime deals with sensitive topics like grooming, bullying, and depression as Onizuka tries to bring his class of troubled teens around, and some of it can be considered controversial today. That said, GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka also tells an inspiring story of redemption that can’t be overlooked.

While contemporary anime fans gush over the likes of Cowboy Bebop, Akira, and Dragon Ball, GTO has only ever received a small global fan base. This is why, even if it keeps returning with live-action series for the Japanese audience, an anime sequel doesn’t seem likely at the moment. Since the story was never fully adapted into the anime, it’d be more reasonable to release a reboot instead of a sequel.
