13 Years Later, Crunchyroll’s Classic Dark Fantasy Returns With Anticipated Revival in July
Puella Magi Madoka Magica is an acclaimed fantasy classic on Crunchyroll with a surprise dark twist beneath its cheerful facade. The story focuses on magical girls and remains one of the most shocking series of all time. The award-winning show released its anime adaptation in 2011 before returning with sequel films in 2012 and 2013. The anime announced a revival film, Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie – Walpurgisnacht: Rising, in 2021 to commemorate the 10th anniversary, but it was hit with several delays. The film was expected to be released in 2024, but it’s finally coming to the Japanese theaters in August this year.
So far, there has been no confirmation on an international theatrical release, but fans can expect an update after the Japanese premiere. However, as the release date draws closer, Mantan Web confirms that the first two films will be getting special screenings. The first film will hit the theaters on July 10th, while the second will be screened from July 17th. The limited screening is only for the Japanese theaters, but international fans can stream them on Crunchyroll.
What Is Puella Magi Madoka Magica About?
This acclaimed original series follows Madoka Kaname and Sayaka Miki, two middle school girls whose ordinary lives take drastic turns after encountering Kyuubey, a mysterious magical familiar. Kyuubey offers the girls an offer to grant any one of their wishes if they become magical girls.
The girls can gain enough power to fulfill their dreams. However, Homura Akemi, a new transfer student and a magical girl, tries her best to stop them from accepting the offer. She claims that the offer isn’t what it looks like, implying there will be a major price to pay. However, once things are set in motion, there’s no way of changing what has been done.
What to Expect From The Upcoming Madoka Magica Movie
The upcoming film is an official sequel to the 2013 film and confirms the return of the staff members and voice actors from the original story. The previous films follow the girls of Mitakihara living their daily lives while occasionally fighting against evil. However, Homura senses something ominous beneath the peaceful atmosphere while others remain oblivious. As her suspicion grows, she notices that someone who shouldn’t even exist is living among them and joining in on their daily routine. The film is focused primarily on Homura as she aims to uncover the truth behind the mysterious circumstances.
The upcoming film will pick up the story from where the previous film left off, bringing a new set of challenges for the girls. So far, there’s no confirmation on the plot, but fans will get to see their favorite characters on the big screen once again. While the film has released several short teaser trailers, it has yet to share a full-length official trailer and a synopsis explaining the plot of the story.
