The expansion of Matt Reeves’ Gotham City in The Penguin proved to be a massive success, earning critical acclaim and becoming a hit for HBO. The series culminated in a major victory at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, where breakout star Cristin Milioti took home the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series for her powerful portrayal of Sofia Falcone. Since the show’s shocking finale aired, talk has turned to the future of the characters and the prospect of the main players turning up in Reeves’ The Batman Part II. But there’s bad news for at least one of them.

Following her Emmy win and the character’s dramatic arc, many viewers could assume (and hope) that Sofia would play a role in the upcoming theatrical sequel, The Batman – Part II. However, Reeves has now clarified (via MTV ) that Cristin’s Sofia will be sitting out the next chapter:

“Cristin is not in this one [The Batman – Part II]. But that’s because we were so deep into the script by the time we were in the show. But we’ll see. I mean, I think she’s incredible. What she did in the show is just astonishing. And what [The Penguin showrunner] Lauren [LeFranc] did in creating that character. I mean, creating this version of the character. It’s so special, so it’d be really exciting to do something with her. But she’s not in this one, in full disclosure, because we were so far along in the story.”

While Sofia Falcone’s absence from the sequel might be disappointing for fans, the narrative of The Penguin leaves the door wide open for her return in a future project. The show’s finale revealed a significant connection to another major character from The Batman, establishing that Sofia is the half-sister of Selina Kyle (Zoë Kravitz). This familial tie provides a strong foundation for a potential reunion, possibly in a Catwoman-focused spinoff or another series. Reeves has been vocal about his desire to continue building out his corner of the DC universe, and with a character as well-received as Milioti’s Sofia, it seems inevitable that she will reappear, even if it is after the events of the next Batman film.

DC Studios Is Developing Another Take on Batman

While Matt Reeves continues to build his “Batman Epic Crime Saga” as a separate, self-contained Elseworlds story, DC Studios is simultaneously developing its own version of the Caped Crusader for the mainline DC Universe. This new Batman will debut in a film titled The Brave and the Bold, which will introduce an older Bruce Wayne who discovers he has a son, Damian Wayne, who has been raised by the League of Assassins. The film, set to be directed by Andy Muschietti, will draw inspiration from Grant Morrison’s seminal comic book run and will feature other members of the extended Bat-Family. The strategy of having two distinct live-action Batmen running concurrently has been a point of discussion among fans, but it allows for vastly different interpretations of the character to coexist, one a grounded crime noir hero and the other a seasoned veteran in a more fantastical world.

The Batman – Part II is now firmly on track, with the script completed and filming set to begin in the spring of 2026. The sequel’s development faced several delays, which pushed its release date and led to unfounded rumors about its cancellation. Reeves originally envisioned his story as a trilogy, and while that is still the plan, the significant gap between films and the new leadership structure at DC Studios has left the final chapter’s status less certain. With DC’s primary focus on building its interconnected universe, the future of the Elseworlds Gotham beyond Part II may depend on the continued success of both its films and potential spinoffs.

The Batman – Part II is scheduled to be released in theaters on October 1, 2027.
