PlayStation Fans Warned About Playing New PS5 Exclusive at Launch

PlayStation fans have been warned about playing a new PS5 exclusive at launch, specifically without the day-one patch. The warning comes from the developer of the PS5 game, which was released today, August 29. In other words, PlayStation fans picking up this PS5 exclusive game today should not try bypassing the update. For those picking the game up digitally, this isn’t really an issue, as it simply means a longer install time because the update will download with the game. However, those picking up physical copies of the game should make sure to have the update downloaded when they boot the title up.

For those out of the loop, the game in question is Lost Soul Aside, which released today on PS5, PS5 Pro, and PC. It is not available on any other console, and there is no word of this changing. Developed by Ultizero Games and published by Sony itself, Lost Soul Aside has been a long time coming. The game was revealed all the way back in 2016 as a solo project from Chinese developer Yang Bing. The reveal went viral, it drew the attention of Sony, which partnered with the game under its China Hero Project initiative, and the scope of the action game expanded as a result. What nobody expected was that a nine-year wait would follow, but that is what has happened.

Day One Patch

Ultizero Games “strongly recommends” downloading the day-one patch for Lost Soul Aside. The patch itself isn’t that big, but it comes with sweeping improvements. For example, it has “comprehensive” performance optimizations and stability improvements that create a smoother gameplay experience. It also adds “visually enhanced effects” and “overall audio refinements.” There is even “polishing and gameplay upgrades.”

Is It Worth It?

Even with the day-one patch, is Lost Soul Aside worth forking over $60 to the PlayStation Store to purchase? Well, on the PS Store, it currently has a 3.97 out of 5 rating, a decent return but nothing that noteworthy. However, on social media the new PS5 exclusive has some positive buzz. To this end, the game’s combat, in particular, has earned lots of praise. However, the story and voice acting have impressed PlayStation fans far less.

Where Are the Reviews?

Ultizero Games and Sony have not said why they did not provide review copies before launch for Lost Soul Aside, but it almost certainly had to do with this day-one patch. If there is a testament to how important this day-one patch is to the game, it is the fact that reviews were withheld in its absence.

What remains curious is why Ultizero Games and Sony waited so long to delay the game earlier this year. The PS5 console exclusive was originally supposed to release back in May, but was delayed just one month before release until August. Now, as evident by this vital day-one patch, it is just barely making this August 29 deadline. So, how was it ever in doubt that it wasn’t going to make its original May release date? Because a last-second delay, like it got, suggests this wasn’t obvious. Unfortunately, we may never get an answer to what the heck happened between April and now regarding this game’s development.

All of that said, and as always, feel free to leave a comment letting us know what you think. Will you be checking out Lost Soul Aside on PS5, PS5 Pro, or PC? If not, a 2025 Game of the Year contender did just get a discount on the PlayStation Store.
