The second season of Peacemaker has given Christopher Smith’s (John Cena) pet companion, Eagly, a surprisingly robust character arc. No longer just a source of bizarre feathery hugs and comedic relief, Eagly has been thrust into the center of the action, defending his home from ARGUS incursions and acquiring his own personal nemesis. That enemy is Red St. Wild (Michael Rooker), an eccentric and world-renowned eagle hunter, whose threat level escalated dramatically after a ritual reveals he possesses mystical powers. While superhero stories often protect their most beloved characters, DCU architect James Gunn is notorious for dispatching fan-favorites for the sake of the story — we are all still reeling from the gut-wrenching death of Nina in Creature Commandos. So, with Eagly in constant peril, many fans have been bracing for the worst.
Warning: Spoilers below for Peacemaker Season 2, Episode 5
The fifth episode of Peacemaker Season 2 masterfully plays with those anxieties, dedicating a significant portion of its runtime to Red St. Wild’s relentless hunt. His first attempt involves a poisoned rat left as bait, a deadly trap that only fails when a hapless fox steals the snack and dies almost instantly. Undeterred, the hunter takes a more direct approach, using his comically oversized rifle to take aim at the bird. While chasing Eagly into the woods, Red St. Wild finds the perfect opportunity to shoot, leading to the bald eagle plummeting from the sky, lying motionless on the forest floor as Red St. Wild gloats over his victory. For one heart-stopping moment, it appears that Eagly’s story has come to a tragic and abrupt end. That is, until the hunter is viciously attacked by a different bird.
What Eagly’s Fake-Out Death Really Means

In a brilliant twist, the fallen bird was not Eagly. The real Eagly appears moments later, leading a coordinated assault with a flock of other eagles. As they swarm the terrified hunter, it becomes clear that Eagly possesses his own mystical powers, commanding the other birds to rip Red St. Wild apart while the villain pleads for his life. The scene confirms that Eagly is the “Primal Eagle” from Red St. Wild’s delusional prophecy, taking a ludicrous running gag and doubling down on it to create a moment of triumph. It also means Eagly is vastly more powerful than we ever knew.
The sequence is perfectly executed because it leans into the audience’s fear, making the fake-out death genuinely shocking. During an agonizing scene, it feels entirely plausible that Gunn would kill off the show’s most popular character. As a result, the subsequent reveal provides immediate comedic relief as the tables are turned in the most violent and absurd way possible. It serves as a definitive and fitting conclusion to Red St. Wild’s journey, as he is undone by the very creature he prophesied would be his destiny. In addition, this entire ordeal elevates Eagly from a loyal pet to a certified mystical powerhouse, right before he joins Christopher Smith in their journey to the alternate dimension.
