Hulu’s streaming library is constantly updating with new titles. Every month, new TV shows and movies join the streamer’s content catalog, the Hulu’s September 2025 streaming lineup just brought one of Nicolas Cage’s newest movies. Following roles in movies like Pig, Renfield, and Dream Scenario, and just prior to the release of Longlegs, the actor starred in a bizarre, psychedelic 2024 movie that has finally made its streaming debut – but not everyone will love it.
As of September 25th, the 2024 Australian psychological thriller The Surfer is streaming on Hulu. Directed by Lorcan Finnegan and written by Thomas Martin, the movie stars Cage as a father who returns to the idyllic beach of his childhood to surf with his son, only to have the excursion upended by locals. Humiliated, he becomes entangled in an escalating conflict that pushes him to his breaking point. Julian McMahon, Nic Cassim, Miranda Tapsell, Alexander Bertrand, Justin Rosniak, Finn Little, Rahel Romahn, Charlotte Maggi, and Nina Young also star. The movie is heading to streaming after first debuting at the 77th Cannes Film Festival in 2024 before hitting select theaters in the U.S. in May.
Why You Should Watch The Surfer
The Surfer drew split reviews from critics and audience members, but both can agree that the movie marks a standout, albeit mind-boggling, performance for Cage. The actor’s portrayal of a man on a descent into ego and madness against the sunny and picturesque Australian backdrop is incredibly hypnotic and believable and helps anchor the overall surreal experience of the film. An absolute fever dream experience, The Surfer is an unhinged psychological journey packed with a mix of ridiculous and humorous moments, surreal visuals, and a bold story that will stick with you long after the credits roll. The Surfer won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s definitely worth an initial watch.
The movie’s “Certified Fresh” Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 85% doesn’t place The Surfer in the top 10 highest-rated movies of Cage’s filmography, but it’s still a respectable placement on the list and far from the bottom. The film proved to be a bit more divisive among the audience and holds a rotten 46% audience rating. The movie, which only had a limited theatrical release has grossed approximately $2.1 million globally.
