The Batman Part II is finally starting to build some momentum towards its big screen release, with the biggest step forward being a completed script. As The Batman sequel starts to move closer to production, the likelihood of getting key details increases tenfold, and now The Batman Part II director Matt Reeves has not only revealed the film’s DCU status, but also which star from The Penguin won’t be making it into The Batman sequel.
In an interview with Josh Horowitz of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Reeves was asked if he had given any thought to creating a DCU project, as James Gunn had previously listed Reeves as one of the directors he’d love to work on a DCU project with. Reeves then cleared up where The Batman sits in relation to the main DC Universe.
“We haven’t talked about anything like that. We have had conversations about how things would work, and all that kind of stuff just in general, and so of course, it would be a lot of fun,” Reeves said. “I mean what I really want to do is I want to play out these stories that we began and make that sort of arrive at the conclusion that I hoped we would arrive at at the beginning, but it’s very exciting.”
“First of all I’m very flattered. That’s very kind of James to say, and it would be really exciting to work with them of course,” Reeves said. “And we are working with them on this. I mean, it’s a DC, it’s Elseworlds, but it is DC, but what the future brings and what I am doing will be clear when it comes.”
One Penguin Star Won’t Make the Sequel
The Batman Part II will be building off themes and events from The Batman as well as The Penguin, which has been cleaning up on the awards circuit over the past few months. That’s especially true of Cristin Milioti, who won rave reviews for her portrayal of Sofia Falcone in the series. Unfortunately, Reeves had some disappointing news to share.
“Cristin’s not in this one, but that’s because we were so deep into the script by the time we were in the show, but we’ll see, because I think she’s incredible,” Reeves said. “What she did in the show is just astonishing, and what Lauren did in creating that character, I mean creating this version of the character, is so special, so it would be really exciting to do something with her, but she’s not in this one.”
“In full disclosure, because we were so far along in the story that it was like oh, it might upset the apple cart, let’s say. Given where the story goes and what we’re exploring. There are some things where it’s like Oh, we’d love to do this, but actually that doesn’t fit within where the story goes,” Reeves said.
The Batman Part II will hit theaters in October of 2027.
