Marvel Fans React to Chris Evans’ “Avengers Physique” After MCU Return Rumors

Avengers: Endgame showcased the heroic sacrifices of Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson), as well as the quiet retirement of Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), concluding a decade-long narrative arc for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most foundational heroes. However, Marvel Studios made an unprecedented move by announcing the return of Downey Jr. for Avengers: Doomsday, not as Iron Man, but as the iconic villain Doctor Doom. This shocking twist, coupled with the idea that this new character will have some connection to Tony Stark, has led to wishful thinking and speculation regarding the return of other original Avengers. After all, if one of the original six can return in a new capacity, it leaves the door wide open for others, such as Evans’ Captain America.

The hype surrounding Evans’ potential MCU comeback reached a fever pitch this past weekend. Appearing at the Toronto International Film Festival for the premiere of his new film Sacrifice, the actor sported a noticeably bulked-up physique that immediately caught the attention of Marvel fans. It is common for actors to undergo rigorous diet and exercise regimens to achieve a specific look for a role, and Evans’ muscular build has been widely interpreted as evidence that he is preparing to once again portray Captain America, or at least a variant of the hero, in the currently filming Avengers: Doomsday.

While some are quick to point out that Evans has consistently maintained a good physique throughout his career, others see his current “Avengers physique” as a deliberate choice for an impending return to the super-soldier role.

Avengers: Doomsday‘s Many Rumors About Captain America

For months, the rumor mill has churned out numerous theories regarding how Steve Rogers could factor into the multiversal conflict of Avengers: Doomsday. One of the most persistent rumors suggests that Doctor Doom, in his quest to conquer or save reality, will assemble his own team of Avengers variants from across the multiverse. This collection of antagonists would reportedly include an evil version of Captain America, potentially a take on the infamous “Hydra Cap” from the comics. Such a storyline would allow Evans to return to the MCU in a fresh capacity, playing a corrupted version of the hero he famously embodied without undermining Anthony Mackie’s new Captain America.

In addition, a more recent set of rumors directly ties Doom’s quest to the conclusion of Avengers: Endgame. This theory posits that Steve Rogers’ decision to travel back in time and live out his life with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) had catastrophic consequences for the multiverse. According to these reports, this act is what caused the incursions, the universe-destroying events that Doctor Doom is supposedly trying to stop. This would reframe Captain America’s happy ending as the catalyst for the entire Multiversal Saga’s central conflict. Some rumors even suggest a deeply personal motivation for Doom, claiming that an incursion caused by Steve’s actions resulted in the death of Doom’s own family, fueling a vengeful quest.

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, 2026.
