Malcolm in the Middle remains a landmark sitcom, celebrated for its single-camera format, fourth-wall breaks, and a chaotic portrayal of a dysfunctional but loving family. For seven seasons, the series captured the hearts of audiences, earning numerous accolades, including seven Emmy Awards. The show’s influence and beloved status have fueled reunion talks for years, with cast members frequently expressing their desire to revisit the world of the Wilkersons. Now, nearly two decades after the original series concluded, that reunion is a reality. Disney+ has officially ordered a four-episode revival, titled Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, bringing most of the original cast back together to explore what has become of the family after all this time. With filming having wrapped in May, star Frankie Muniz is now offering his perspective on the revival and what longtime fans can expect from the family’s return.
“I think people will be surprised, in a sense, where everybody is and the story,” Muniz said during an appearance on the Lightweights podcast. He also acknowledged the difficulty of capturing the passage of time in a limited series but expressed confidence in the creative team’s direction. “It’s hard to fit in 20 years of stuff into four 30-minute episodes, right? But I think people are going to be very happy with what they came up with.”
“I’m not exaggerating when I say filming this reboot, like I loved it so much, way more than I ever thought I could have,” Muniz said about his excitement for the revival. “We ended in May, and I haven’t talked to anybody since, you know what I mean? I’ve been gone. I’ve only been home, I think, for 12 days since the beginning of the year. I’m just always crazy, and I think next week, I’m going to have time. I’m going to reach out [to the Malcolm in the Middle cast].”
Everything We Know About the Malcolm in the Middle Revival

The Malcolm in the Middle revival was spearheaded by Bryan Cranston, who plays the family patriarch Hal, and was written and executive-produced by original series creator Linwood Boomer. The story centers on Hal and Lois’ (Jane Kaczmarek) 40th wedding anniversary party, an occasion that brings the family back together. The official synopsis also reveals that Malcolm is now a father himself, introducing a new generation to the family’s signature mayhem.
Joining Muniz, Cranston, and Kaczmarek are other key members of the original cast. Christopher Masterson is confirmed to return as the eldest brother, Francis, and Justin Berfield will reprise his role as the perpetually troublesome Reese. However, Erik Per Sullivan, who played the youngest brother, Dewey, has retired from acting and will not be part of the revival. Instead, the role of Dewey has been recast, with Caleb Ellsworth-Clark stepping in. Finally, Anthony Timpano will be playing Jamie, and Vaughan Murrae will be portraying Kelly, the child Lois was revealed to be pregnant with in the series finale. New additions to the cast include Keeley Karsten as Malcolm’s daughter, Leah, and Kiana Madeira as Malcolm’s girlfriend, Tristan.
Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ in December 2025.
