Emily in Tim Burton's Corpse Bride

Director Tim Burton has carved out a singular space in Hollywood, becoming one of contemporary cinema’s most iconic filmmakers. His unique “Burtonesque” style, a blend of gothic visuals, surrealism, and dark fairy tales, has influenced a generation of creators and defined a string of cinematic hits from Edward Scissorhands to Batman. Furthermore, Burton’s distinct aesthetic, which often champions outsiders and finds beauty in the macabre, has proven remarkably enduring. In recent years, he has found massive success by bringing his signature vision to television with Netflix’s Wednesday, and he is currently expanding one of his most beloved properties with a follow-up to Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, a sequel that became a smashing hit. Now, another of his fan-favorite classics is set to make a comeback, albeit in a more modest way.

In celebration of its 20th anniversary, Tim Burton’s stop-motion animated feature Corpse Bride is returning to theaters with a stunning 4K restoration, reveals Empire. Distribution company Park Circus is handling the return, with screenings confirmed to roll out across the United Kingdom and Ireland this October. The company has also teased that “select international territories” will be included in the release plans. Unfortunately, there has been no official announcement regarding a theatrical run for the 4K restoration of Corpse Bride in the United States, which might disappoint some fans. However, since we are still over a month away from the movie’s anniversary, we can still hope this will change.

Corpse Bride follows Victor Van Dort (voiced by Johnny Depp), a timid young man in a 19th-century European village who is arranged to marry the gentle Victoria Everglot (voiced by Emily Watson). After nervously fleeing his wedding rehearsal, Victor wanders into a forest to practice his vows. In a moment of inspiration, he places the wedding ring on what he believes is a tree branch, only for it to be the skeletal finger of Emily (voiced by Helena Bonham Carter), the titular Corpse Bride, who rises from her grave to claim him as her husband. Whisked away to the Land of the Dead, Victor must navigate a surprisingly vibrant and lively underworld while trying to return to his true love in a world of the living that, by contrast, is depicted in muted colors.

Upon its release, Corpse Bride was a critical and commercial success, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature and grossing over $117 million worldwide. Critics praised the film for its stunningly detailed animation, emotionally resonant story, and whimsical yet macabre tone. The visual storytelling is a highlight, with the Land of the Dead ironically presented as a more joyous place than the repressed world Victor nows, which leads him to question how happy he truly is. Danny Elfman’s score and original songs, including the memorable “Remains of the Day,” were also singled out as key components of the film’s charm. Over the past two decades, Corpse Bride has only solidified its legacy, celebrated as a beautiful and bittersweet fairy tale that showcases Burton’s unique ability to blend the gothic with the heartfelt in one of the finest examples of stop-motion animation ever produced.

Corpse Bride will return to theaters in the UK, Ireland, and select international territories on October 10th.
