The defeat of Thanos (Josh Brolin) in Avengers: Endgame came at a steep price, effectively ending the careers of half of the original Avengers cast. Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) sacrificed their lives, while Captain America (Chris Evans) chose retirement in the past. The remaining heroes have since drifted apart. Hawkeye saw Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) actively training his replacement in Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), and the Hulk family expanded with the debut of She-Hulk (Tatiana Maslany). Plus, while Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) is set to return for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it has been a while since he was involved in frontline heroics.
Thor (Chris Hemsworth), however, remains the only founding Avenger unambiguously active, defending the cosmos alongside his adopted daughter, Love (India Rose Hemsworth). With Hemsworth joining the massive cast of Avengers: Doomsday, it is clear the God of Thunder will play a big part in the movie. Still, fans are wondering what the future holds for the Asgardian warrior after the universe-shattering crossover event.
“I don’t know. We’ll see where this one goes,” Hemsworth said about Thor’s future after Avengers: Doomsday while speaking with the BBC. “We are unpacking that as we speak, and figuring out where each of these characters goes. I’m just thankful for being involved with this one at Marvel, back together with a lot of the old cast, and then the new cast. It’s something I certainly love. We’ll see what happens.”
These latest comments do little to quell the uncertainty surrounding Thor’s long-term trajectory. Just a few months ago, a thank-you video posted by Hemsworth was widely interpreted by fans as a heartfelt farewell to his fifteen-year tenure as the hero. More recently, however, reports emerged that Disney intervened to prevent Hemsworth from performing a particularly dangerous stunt for his show Limitless, citing the need to protect Thor’s future in the franchise. These mixed signals mean Thor 5 could still be produced, despite Hemsworth being cagey about his post-Doomsday fate.
Is Marvel Studios Rebooting the MCU After Avengers: Secret Wars?

The massive scope of Avengers: Doomsday suggests that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is building towards a transformative climax. The film is confirmed to unite the Avengers with teams like the Fantastic Four and, significantly, members of the X-Men from the Fox-era films. This epic team-up serves as the first chapter of a two-part event that will conclude with Avengers: Secret Wars.
As comic book readers know, the 2015 Secret Wars storyline was a cataclysmic event that served as a soft reboot of the entire Marvel Comics continuity. In that story, the multiverse was destroyed, with remnants of different realities fused together into a single “Battleworld” ruled by Doctor Doom. The conclusion of the event saw the restoration of the primary Marvel Universe, but with key elements from other realities integrated, effectively refreshing decades of storytelling.
It appears the MCU is poised to follow a similar path. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has explicitly stated that Secret Wars is about “beginnings” and will “reset” the cinematic universe. While he has expressed caution with the word “reboot,” he has confirmed that the studio is thinking in terms of a “reset, singular timeline.” This creative overhaul would allow Marvel to streamline its increasingly complex continuity and set a new course for the future. Feige has also been candid about the possibility of recasting iconic roles, including foundational characters like Iron Man and Captain America, after the events of Secret Wars. This plan, combined with the multiversal narrative of the upcoming Avengers films, strongly indicates that the MCU as audiences have known it for over a decade is headed toward a fundamental reinvention.
Thor will return when Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
