Absolute Batman Creator Reveals The Origin of Absolute Joker

DC Comics

Absolute Batman has become one of the biggest comic books printed by DC Comics, recreating the Dark Knight and many of his villains in dramatic ways. Villains like Killer Croc, Black Mask, Catwoman, Bane, and many others look radically different from their main universe counterparts. Recently, at this year’s Dragoncon, series writer Scott Snyder discussed the new Clown Prince of Crime, how he was created, and what the new take on the Joker might have that the original version did not.

During his panel at this year’s Dragon Con, Snyder discussed how the Absolute Joker would change to reflect the Dark Knight’s new world, “The Joker to me is always the opposite of Batman. So if Absolute Batman is this thing, Joker would become a billionaire with all the resources, who is telling Bruce, ‘Well, you’re not going to become anything,’ and then it becomes, who would he put in Batman’s way? Well, Joker plays both sides, so he creates crime and creates the means to stop crime. He’s always playing us, and the Joker issue explains what a clown is and why the Joker loves them.”

Snyder then explained how the telling of the Joker’s origin will take readers back to the 1800s to give them a full picture of this new take on the Clown Prince of Crime, “It starts with someone you think is Joker’s great great grandfather in the early 1800s who is a clown on the streets of Gotham. It keeps revisiting this idea of who this clown was and what did he do, getting darker and darker. It asks, ‘What is a clown?’ ‘What does he love about clowns?’ It starts with, Oh he loves clowns because they’re funny and they make us laugh and then it goes to, ‘Maybe he loves clowns because they mock us.’ They’re a pantomime of our own buffoonery. In mythology, a clown is the only one who survives everything and laughs at us as we die.”

“If Bruce is Joker now, and he is chaos and he is disruption, then Joker is the system and order. That means Joker would have a Batcave, he would have a mansion, he would be handsome, and be a socialite. Maybe he has Robins!”

The Absolute Joker So Far

To date, there have been eleven issues of Absolute Batman for DC Comics’ fans to check out, with this larger-than-life Dark Knight struggling with his battle against Bane. Sent to do battle with Gotham’s protector by the Joker, Bane takes things up a notch from his original universe iteration and juices himself up to a wild degree. As for the Joker, there are still plenty of mysteries surrounding this new Absolute villain, but from what we’ve seen so far, he might just be the creepiest take on the comic book villain so far.

Rather than permanently having a smile etched on his face and the traditional white skin with green hair combo, Absolute Joker appears to have a disease that transforms him into something that looks more like the Clown Prince of Crime behind the scenes. Apparently, to look normal, he needs regular transfusions from young victims that he holds hostage while masterminding everything in the background. It was a gruesome introduction for the character, and Snyder has already shared on social media the fact that he plans on diving into the character’s story with the upcoming fifteenth issue of the series.

Scott Snyder has had a long run with the Dark Knight before he stepped into the role as one of the big architects of the Absolute Universe. In 2011, Snyder was chosen to be the main writer of the Batman series for DC’s New 52, introducing big new concepts to Gotham such as the Court of Owls. While he has since handed off the Dark Knight baton to various other creative teams, Absolute Batman has been a wild success for DC Comics in introducing a very different take on Bruce Wayne across the board. When this Joker and Batman finally butt heads, it’s sure to be a major event in the comic book universe.
