Look Back

Best known for creating critically acclaimed manga such as Chainsaw Man and Fire Punch, Tatsuki Fujimoto has also released several intriguing series and one-shots over his decade-long career. His one-shot, Look Back, which was published in 2021, received an anime film adaptation by Studio DURIAN, and it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to consider it the best anime film of 2024. The nuanced story with emotional moments was already well-loved among fans before the anime film, but its popularity skyrocketed after the anime’s premiere. While fans await the live-action film on September 11th, 2026, the official website of GKIDS confirms a 4K UHD Collector’s Edition of the film.

It will officially be released on September 8th, just three days before the live-action premiere. The collector’s edition is already available for pre-order, and it will ship on September 9th. It’s available in both Japanese and English audio with subtitles in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, and French. Additionally, fans will get exciting bonuses such as an interview with the director and cast members, a 160-page book, and more.

What Is Look Back About?

The story follows Ayumu Fujino, who always draws four-panel manga for her school newspaper and enjoys creating art while being praised for her talent. However, she was asked to turn over one of her manga slots to Kyomoto, a junior who barely attends school but is extremely talented. After seeing Kyomoto’s talent and the fact that her classmates talk badly about her art, Fujino is overwhelmed with jealousy. She is unwilling to accept that Kyomoto is getting more praise than she is for her detailed artwork.

Following the incident, she devotes all her time to learning to create manga and improving her art before eventually meeting Kyomoto when she was in sixth grade. Despite her initially salty feelings for the girl, Fujino is unable to hate Kyomoto, who turned out to be her admirer. The young girls eventually became close friends and began to create manga together. The story deals with grief, loss, and the journey of self-discovery through an artist’s lens.

Unlike the battle Shonen series, Look Back is a nuanced coming-of-age story with emotional moments that will fit perfectly in the live-action version. The story follows two young girls aspiring to become manga artists, but later on very different paths in the future.

Although the film’s release date is only for Japan, GKIDS confirms bringing it to international territories such as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Ireland soon after. We can expect an update later this year or even in the first half of 2027. Palme d’Or winner and Oscar-nominated filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda, known for Shoplifters, will serve as the writer, editor, and director of the live-action film.
