Yoko Kamio is one of the most renowned Shojo manga creators of all time, best known for her 1990s classic Hana Yori Dango, commonly known as Boys Over Flowers in the West. The manga received the Shogakukan Manga Award in 1996 and eventually became one of the best-selling manga series of all time. Additionally, it’s the best-sellling Shojo manga of all time, with over 61 million copies sold worldwide, recorded in 2015. The manga hasn’t shared a new update in over a decade, but it’s reasonable to expect the sales have only increased by now. Additionally, the manga also made a Guinness World Record for having the most published copies of a Shojo manga series written by a single creator. Four years after the manga’s debut, Toei Animation released an anime adaptation in 1996 and aired 51 episodes.
Unfortunately, despite its critical acclaim, the manga was never fully adapted. After making fans for several years, Hana Yori Dango is finally being released in a complete Blu-ray DVD set thanks to Discotek Media. While the anime has always been praised for its incredible story, it’s been difficult for fans to get their hands on physical media due to limitations in regional availability and high prices. The official website of Discotek Media confirms that all episodes of the anime are available in English dub and Japanese dub with English subtitles. It will officially be released on August 26th, 2026, and it’s already available for pre-order.
What Is Hana Yori Dango About?

The story centers around Makino Tsukushi, an ordinary girl from a poor family who wants to get through her final two years at the prestigious Eitoku Gakuen peacefully. However, it doesn’t take long for her to draw everyone’s attention when she stands up for her friend against the F4, the four most powerful and popular boys at the school. She also gets a red card, a declaration of war from them, and now she can’t dream of having a peaceful life again.
However, refusing to back down, her unexpected encounters with one of the F4, Hanazawa Rui, make her realize there’s more to him than meets the eye. Despite never releasing a sequel, the anime is still a favorite among Shojo fans for hilarious comedy along with complex undertones with retro animation that’s praised to this day.
Hana Yori Dango May Never Release a Sequel Season

Unfortunately, after almost three decades since the anime’s conclusion, fans have no hope for a sequel season. While the 1990s was a legendary year for Shojo fans, it couldn’t compare to the popularity of the Shonen demographic. Many studios preferred to invest more in Shonen series, including Toei Animation, which produced classics such as Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball.
The studio gained further recognition thanks to One Piece, and eventually forgot all about this Shojo romance. While there’s always a possibility for the manga to get a brand new adaptation, nothing can be certain as of yet.
