Shonen Jump’s Major 2026 Cancellation Officially Confirmed as a Huge Mistake

The wave of cancellations in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine hit one of the promising new-gen series. Written and illustrated by Akira Inui, Alien Headbutt reached its conclusion in May this year after releasing only 16 chapters. It’s the creator’s first serialized manga, and while it didn’t create hype among Japanese fans, international fans were more than interested to see how the story would unfold. Unfortunately, the hype wasn’t nearly enough for Shueisha to keep serializing it, which is why the series soonder tan expected. Readers were heartbroken to see the creator apologizing for the cancellation, especially since he didn’t get a chance to flesh out the story as he wanted.

Regardless of the publisher’s treatment of the series, international fans aren’t the only ones who recognized its potential. The official X handle of Weekly Shonen Jump confirms that the manga has been nominated for the Tsugi ni Kuru Manga Awards 2026, which is a major recognition for any series. This simply proves that the hasty cancellation couldn’t demerit the series regardless of the low viewership. Along with Alien Headbutt, Someone Hertz, a new rising star of the magazine, has also been nominated.

The series received praise for its impressive art style and a unique premise, even though it didn’t cause a lot of hype after its debut. While the cancellation is disappointing, it’s not surprising after the poor reception following its release. Even the promotional videos of the manga shared by the official YouTube channel of Shonen Jump barely got enough views to be even considered a decent hit.

Alien Headbutt is only the beginning of Inui’s career, and the creator might return again with a brand new story. Inui has previously worked on several one-shots for the Shonen Jump+ platform, and his manga began serialization on February 8th, 2026. It’s not rare for cancelled Jump creators to make a comeback in the same magazine, although it often takes a few years for them to return with something new.

The story focuses on Shirokiba, who returned to the small island he grew up on after becoming a pro wrestling champion. Unexpectedly, he finds out that his homeland has been overrun by mysterious aliens and uses his skills to take them down. There’s never a dull moment on the island as this action-packed story brings more challenges for Shirokiba and his allies while the truth behind the invasion slowly comes to light.

All chapters of the manga are available to read on the official app of Manga Plus and the Viz Media website. The manga has been compiled into two volumes, and both will be released on July 4th, 2026. So far, the release date has been shared for Japanese fans, and it’s unclear if it will be licensed by Viz Media in English.
