Three Years Ago, Hulu’s Biggest Dark Fantasy Anime Ended Without Confirming a Sequel

Heavenly Delusion was one of the wildest and darkest anime of 2023, but it never gained the attention it deserved. The anime is based on an ongoing manga by Masakazu Ishiguro, which began serialization in 2018 in Kodansha’s Monthly Afternoon magazine. The anime, produced by Production I.G., receieved acclaimed right after its debut but never got the attention it deserved. The story follows a pair of young travelers exploring the countryside while encountering some of the creepiest creatures in any anime.

Usually, for an anime series, even an unpopular one, a sequel announcement doesn’t take this long. However, considering that the studio has remained silent all these years, a second season seems unlikely at this point. It also doesn’t help that the animation studio is tight on schedule due to multiple popular projects such as Haikyu, Kaiju No. 8, and more.

What Is Heavenly Delusion About?

This sci-fi mystery takes place 15 years after a massive disaster struck human civilization. Dangerous man-eating monsters roam around the land and continue to pose a threat to the survivors. As humanity is on the brink of collapse, an isolated facility shelters children and keeps them away from harm.

On the other hand, Maru and Kiruko, two young survivors, embark on a journey to search for a place called Heaven. While the reason behind their journey is different, their destination stays the same. The story unfolds their past burdens and secrets as they try to find a better place in the broken world. However, their journey is full of hardships, especially when they have to survive in a world swarming with flesh-eating monsters.

Heavenly Delusion‘s Sequel Is Still a Possibility

Following the anime’s broadcast, the Blu-ray DVD was released in Japan in the same year, and it was a massive flop. While the low sales aren’t an encouraging sign, it doesn’t mean that the second season won’t happen again. Since the manga is still ongoing and releases chapters on a monthly schedule, it’s not surprising for anime series to take years or even a decade to return with a sequel season.

Fans of Yona of the Dawn kept asking for a sequel for a decade before it was eventually confirmed in December last year during the manga’s conclusion. Additionally, the Heavenly Delusion manga is considered a hit with over two million copies in circulation, which was recorded in July 2025. Since a year has passed, the numbers should have only increased by now.
