It’s been around a decade since Osamu Akimoto’s classic Kochikame manga reached its conclusion. Debuting in 1976, the manga reached its conclusion after a legendary run of 40 years, becoming the longest series in manga history. It was published on Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump throughout its run and released 200 volumes over the decades. With over 157 million copies in circulation, it also etched its name in history as one of the highest-selling manga of all time. The anime adaptation was broadcast in several regions outside of Japan and eventually gained a wider audience, especially among kids, thanks to its gag comedy. Despite the main story’s ending, Akimoto continues working on new stories even now.

According to @WSJ_manga, the manga will return with a new one-shot in the Weekly Shonen Jump Issue 36, which will be out in August this year. The update comes from a reliable source of information regarding all kinds of Shonen Jump anime and manga. While details on the one-shot’s story haven’t been revealed, the post also confirmed that volumes 202 and 203 will be released in September and October 2026, respectively. The volumes will compile a series of one-shots that Akimoto has released ever since the main story’s ending.

What Is Kochikame About?

The story follows the daily shenanigans of Kankichi Ryotsu, an underpaid policeman, as he comes up with underhanded money-making schemes but ends up in trouble with the department chief. His new attempts at making easy money always turn into a hilarious series of disasters, turning everyone’s lives into chaos. The plot is usually gag-driven, focusing on not only the protagonist but also the characters around him. Rather than a streamlined story, Kochikame is episodic in nature, bringing new challenges for Ryotsu in each episode.

A Kochikame Reboot Is in The Works

During the Jump Festa 2026, the series shocked fans with a new reboot by Studio Gallop, the same animation studio responsible for the original series since its premiere in 1996. The studio has steadily released the anime episodes, movies, OVAs, and more up to the 2010s, and is all set for the reboot. Considering the astronomical number of manga chapters, a full one-on-one adaptation in this day and age is next to impossible. However, since Kochikame still isn’t as popular in the West as it is in Japan, the project aims to take this exceptional series to even newer heights of popularity.

Jump Festa is the largest annual convention held by Shueisha, known for announcing several exciting announcements and updates on new Shonen Jump projects. Although the reboot announcement was made in December 2025 with a new visual, further details have yet to be shared by the animation studio. The project aims to celebrate the franchise’s 50th anniversary, and it’s unclear if it’s going to be a new TV show or a film. We can expect more updates in the next few months on the anime’s official website.
