Ping Pong the Animation

Taiyo Matsumoto is one of the most legendary manga creators of all time, and his works are always praised among readers for their exceptional art style and storytelling. While the creator is best known for Ping Pong, a 1996 manga, he has also worked on more than a dozen titles. The creator is still active and continues to captivate fans with his exceptional stories. Before his Ping Pong manga became popular, he released critically acclaimed stories such as Sunny, Tekkonkinkreet, and Takemitsuzamurai, and more. Unfortunately, not all of his manga titles received the attention they deserve, especially if they aren’t globally available or don’t have an anime adaptation yet.

This includes his 1994 title, Brothers of Japan, a collection of miscellaneous one-shots. Released in a single volume, the title features several one-shots from the creator, which were all but forgotten until Manga Mavericks, a publisher, decided to pick it up. The manga will be released in English for the first time on February 23rd, 2027. The manga is already available for pre-order on the official website of the publisher and will be shipped across the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, Europe, India, Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand.

Taiyo Matsumoto Shared Thoughts on the Brothers of Japan‘s English Release

Along with the English release’s announcement, the publisher also shared a note from the creator. Matsumoto said, “I’m very happy that English speakers will now be able to read Brothers of Japan. As I drew this when I was in my 20s, it contains a lot of my own immaturity, which is embarrassing.

He continued, But at the same time, it also contains soft and painful expressions that only young people can draw, and I’m fond of it. I hope you all enjoy it as well.”

Before kickstarting his career as a renowned mangaka, Matsumoto released a number of one-shot manga in his 20’s, which were all compiled in a single volume. While the creator speaks about his embarrassment over the stories reflecting his immaturity, each one-shot offers a unique outlook on his artistic universe. The titular story primarily focuses on two brothers who wish to reach the other side of the world. The manga is known for portraying a simplistic yet raw storytelling, much like the rest of Matsumoto’s works.

2026 is turning out to be an exceptional year for Matsumoto’s fans as the award-winning anime adaptation of his manga made its theatrical comeback on May 31st and June 1st this year. The 4k remastered version of the acclaimed film was distributed by GKIDS to commemorate the anime’s 20th anniversary.

Even after two decades, Tekkonkinkreet remains one of the most underrated masterpieces of all time. Thanks to the unique, groundbreaking animation, the film beautifully captures the deeply touching tale of two young boys defending Treasure Town against the Yakuza, who try to take it over.
