Ever since its establishment in 1985, Studio Ghibli has remained the most iconic animation studio when it comes to anime movies. Every film produced by the studio, especially those directed by Hayao Miyazaki, is famous for its striking visuals, rich storytelling, and deep emotional impact. As one of the co-founders and acclaimed directors, Miyazaki had a profound impact on shaping the studio’s legacy. Fans are always awaiting new updates from the studio, even if it doesn’t release new films this year. A recent post by the official X handle of Anime Expo confirms that GKIDS will be holding a panel on July 5th, the fourth day of the convention.
GKIDS is an American film and television distributor, known for bringing several acclaimed classic anime to the theaters, including films produced by Studio Ghibli and directed by filmmakers such as Mamoru Hosoda and Masaaki Yuasa. Fans can expect major new updates on theatrical anime releases, not just for Studio Ghibli films, but also award-winning films from other studios. Anime Expo is the largest annual convention held in California, known for bringing exciting news, merchandise, and more for fans across the globe. Each year, fans get exciting updates on older and upcoming projects, and no doubt, this year already has a set of surprises planned for fans all over the world.
Studio Ghibli Fest Kicks Off in June With Ponyo

Before the Anime Expo, fans can still look forward to the annual fest, which will begin this month. In order to celebrate the studio’s unparalleled success, GKIDS and Fathom Entertainment organize an annual Studio Ghibli Fest in North America that brings the studio’s beloved classics to the theaters for limited screenings. The fest offers fans a chance to experience the animated classics on the big screen, accompanied by special content and in both original Japanese and English-dubbed versions.
It was introduced in 2017, and this year is a lot special since several films are commemorating major milestones. Spirited Away is celebrating its 25th anniversary, while Castle in the Sky was released 40 years ago. The fest will kick off with the 2008 classic film, Ponyo, which will begin screening on June 13th and end its theatrical re-release on the 17th of the same month. Tickets and the entire schedule of this year’s fest are already available on the official website of GKIDS and Fathom Entertainment, so don’t forget to check out the dates and timing at your nearest theater.
Studio Ghibli Won’t Be Returning With a New Anime Film Anytime Soon

Although Miyazaki announced his retirement after his latest film, The Boy and the Heron, in 2023, he returned to the studio not too long after the film was released. He confirmed that he is working on another feature film, although no details have been shared even after three years. Despite his age, Miyazaki is working diligently on his upcoming project, and fans might get a new update soon.
In March this year, Ghibli co-founder and current president Toshio Suzuki and director Goro Miyazaki revealed that although Hayao Miyazaki loses motivation on days he’s not feeling well, he is still often energetic when he’s working. While working on a new film, he also released a Panorama Box, which includes several newly drawn illustrations of his most iconic films. The box will be displayed at Ghibli’s Grand Warehouse starting July 8th, 2026.
