Eiichiro Oda’s acclaimed One Piece manga began serialization in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in 1997 and eventually became the best-selling manga series of all time. The anime has been serializing since 1999 and is currently grabbing all the attention from fans thanks to its spectacular animation. While the main story is currently in the Final Saga, the franchise often returns with new spin-offs and side projects. One Piece has dozens of beloved characters, so there will never be enough spin-offs to capture all their stories. Regardless, every new project from the series is sure to grab attention from fans, especially if it involves Roronoa Zoro, Luffy’s first mate and the second most popular character in the series.
A prequel spin-off about his past before joining Luffy’s crew was serialized in the official One Piece magazine. The story was written by Jun Esaka, a renowned author famous for writing spin-offs, including One Piece novel: Heroines, Naruto: Sasuke Retsuden, and several more Naruto spin-offs. The official X handle of Jump Books confirmed that his story will be compiled into a novel and is set to be released on July 3rd, 2026, and it’s already available for pre-order. The release date is only for the Japanese version as fans await an international release of the novel.
Zoro’s Novel Is Set Before One Piece‘s Story Began

The novel primarily centers around Zoro’s life after leaving the Shimutsuki village in order to become the World’s Strongest Swordsman and fulfill the promise he made to his childhood friend, Kuina. Zoro was lost in the sea and couldn’t find his way to Dracule Mihawk, the one who currently holds the title. In order to survive, he became a bounty hunter and put his exceptional skills to use in catching all kinds of dangerous pirates. Zoro eventually became famous in the East Blue, and tales of his powers were even spread across the Grand Line.
He met several people during his days working as a bounty hunter. He eventually landed in major trouble and met Luffy before joining his crew. Zoro has been Luffy’s most trusted ally since then. He is always ready to watch his Captain’s back and give him the support he needs to walk on the path of becoming the Pirate King. The novel was initially introduced in 2024 and is finally getting a compilation. While it can’t be considered a canon source since it’s not written or supervised by Oda, the story is intriguing enough to keep fans occupied.
Since the main story doesn’t have an expansive backstory of the character, the spin-off novel adds more depth to him, even if it will never be included in the original story. Ever since his introduction, Zoro has always been loved by fans as Luffy’s right-hand man, which is why the spin-off caused quite a buzz in 2024, when it was introduced. We can expect an English update in a few months or at least after a year.
