A very specific – and strange – Batman question needs to be answered by James Gunn after 2025’s Superman teased the Dark Knight’s DC Universe debut. Superman introduced us to David Corenswet’s titular Man of Steel and a number of other new heroes for the rebooted DCU. While the Justice Gang was introduced – comprising Mister Terrific, Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern, and Hawkgirl – we have yet to properly meet some of DC Comics’ most iconic superheroes in the new DCU. This includes Bruce Wayne’s Caped Crusader, though DC Studios has teased Batman’s debut several times already.
While DC Studios teasing Batman’s debut is, of course, very exciting, one of Superman’s mentions of the Dark Knight has spurred some confusion. After the citizens of Metropolis are ordered to evacuate when Lex Luthor’s other-dimensional rift starts to threaten the city, some eagle-eyed viewers noticed that many people chose to evacuate to none other than Gotham City. In DC Comics, Gotham is the home of several street-level heroes, including Batman himself, but the city also fosters an immense criminal underground that has birthed some of DC’s most terrifying villains – so it surely isn’t any safer than Metropolis.
Some of Superman’s Refugees Chose A Poor Exit

There is speculation that the DCU’s version of Gotham City will be brighter and less gritty than the iteration seen in Matt Reeves’ Batman Epic Crime Saga. Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne exists in a dark and dangerous Gotham, but set photos from the recent production of Clayface – also set in Gotham – and some scenes in Creature Commandos have revealed a more normal-looking and diverse city. Even so, it’s likely that the DCU’s Gotham City will still be populated by some of DC’s most haunting antagonists, which raises the question as to why citizens felt safe enough to evacuate there.
The likes of the Riddler, the Penguin, Poison Ivy, Two-Face, the Court of Owls, and many more villains in DC Comics all have roots in Gotham City’s criminal underworld. Perhaps the most legendary villain in DC Comics is also from Gotham, and Clayface’s set photos may have also teased the Joker’s DCU debut. With so many horrible, dangerous, and unpredictable supervillains residing in Gotham, it’s incredible and almost unbelievable that the citizens of Metropolis would feel comfortable evacuating there, even if the cities are only a few miles apart. They certainly wouldn’t have been any safer.
Clayface is gearing up to properly introduce us to Gotham in the DCU – a location that has barely been seen so far. Several other projects could bring us to the city before The Brave and the Bold finally debuts a new actor as Bruce Wayne’s Batman and other members of the Bat-Family, all of whom will have an important role in Gotham City’s world of vigilantes. Teases to Gotham have been great to see in the DCU so far, but we’re excited for more of the city’s nuances and lifestyles to be revealed.
