The Paramount+ streaming library is packing a blast from the past that ‘90s kids won’t want to miss. The past few weeks have seen the streamer stocking its content catalog with dozens of new films. Among new arrivals like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and Face/Off is a cult classic from the ‘90s that’s hard not to love.
As of September 1st, Joe Dante’s action comedy film Small Soldiers is available to stream on Paramount+. The genre-bending movie, which features a stacked cast and plenty of memorable characters, centers around a new set of action figures released before they’ve been tested. When teenager Alan buys the action figures, unaware that they’ve been programmed with military technology, he finds himself in the middle of a war as the Commando Elite begin targeting their peaceful enemies, the Gorgonites, who won’t go down without a fight. The film is now streaming nearly three decades after it first hit theaters in 1998.
Why You Should Watch Small Soldiers
Small Soldiers was only a moderate box office success and received mixed reviews from critics and audiences upon its release, but over the years the film has risen to become a ‘90s cult classic. Often described as Gremlins meets G.I. Joe, the movie presents a creative and exciting storyline that is not only silly and over-the-top but also manages to balance a family-friendly adventure with dark satire and a biting social commentary, making it enjoyable for all ages. The film’s exciting action sequences, which lead to a lengthy climactic battle, make it consistently entertaining, while the combined use of animatronics, CGI, and live-action still holds up today.
Nearly three decades have passed since Small Soldiers was released on the big screen, but the movie remains a nostalgic favorite for many. More than just its satirical take on consumer culture and impressive special effects, the movie is also well-remembered for its outstanding voice cast that features actors from The Dirty Dozen voicing the Commando Elite and actors from This Is Spinal Tap voicing the Gorgonites. The movie also features Kirsten Dunst, Gregory Smith, and Devin Leary, as well as Phil Hartman in his final on-screen role prior to his passing.
