James Gunn Confirms Live-Action G.I. Robot in DCU (And Where You Won’t See Him)

The other shoe finally dropped in Peacemaker season 2’s sixth episode, revealing the true nature of Peacemaker’s utopian Earth. That was revealed to be an Earth James Gunn refers to as Earth X, and during his time on this other Earth, Peacemaker has met plenty of unique individuals. Now that the big secret is out, fans have started to wonder who else the 11th Street Kids might meet during their time there, and one character that has come up quite a bit is the beloved Creature Commandos star G.I. Robot. James Gunn has now addressed G.I. Robot’s live-action debut, and has even revealed where you (likely) won’t see him show up.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn was asked if the big twist of Earth X means we’ll get to see G.I. Robot in live-action. Gunn then said yes, but also that it’s more complicated than that, and probably won’t happen in Peacemaker season 2.

“The answer to that question, which, this is going to be all anybody talks about from this interview, is yes, but not necessarily when you think you’re going to see him. So not necessarily in Peacemaker season 2,” Gunn said.

A Live-Action G.I. Robot

G.I. Robot quickly established himself as a fan favorite during season 1 of Creature Commandos, and while we’ll likely see him return in a second season of Creature Commandos, many have wondered if we would get a live-action appearance first. Gunn has also already revealed that not only have they had those live-action discussions previously, but that they now know how to make it happen, thanks to their work on Superman.

“Yeah, we’ve talked about all of these characters in live-action and how we would do them, if we did them, in live-action,” Gunn told THR. That’s when he teased something revolutionary: “I don’t want to give away any secrets, but we use some technology in Superman that’s completely new in regards to this kind of stuff. So we would know exactly how to do GI Robot.”

Where Could He Show Up?

While Gunn didn’t outright eliminate Peacemaker season 2 as a debut, his answer does heavily suggest it’s not happening there. Now the question becomes where it could happen if not in Peacemaker, and the good news is that there’s a key character who appears to be a major part of everything in the DCU.

That character is Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr., who has now been a part of Creature Commandos, Superman, and Peacemaker season 2. Flag Sr. will likely be returning for Man of Tomorrow as well in some form or fashion, and projects like Clayface, the Bane and Deathstroke project, and Supergirl all seem like places he could show up as well. Rick Flag Sr. is an effective tether as he already worked alongside G.I. Robot, so wherever Flag Sr. goes, G.I. Robot can always show up.

If we’re talking cameo appearances, Supergirl is possible, especially after the events of Superman and the role Flag Sr. played there. Could he call in some extra backup, and if he does, for whom? Then there’s Lanterns, which is an Earth-bound mystery, and when you’re dealing with Green Lanterns, having a delightfully chaotic and armed-to-the-teeth robot doesn’t seem so far-fetched.

We’ll have to wait and see where G.I. Robot eventually pops up, but at least we know the foundation is already in place to make it a reality, and we can’t wait. You can catch new episodes of Peacemaker season 2 on HBO Max.
