5 Ways Star Wars Can Fully Make Darth Revan Canon Again

Star Wars Revan

Revan is one of the most iconic characters in the Star Wars Legends continuity, and for good reason. His journey from Jedi Knight to Sith Lord and back again captivated a generation of fans through the beloved video game Knights of the Old Republic. While elements of his story have been briefly referenced in the new Disney canon, the full scope of Revan’s saga remains in the shadows. Bringing him into the official timeline would be a brilliant move, entertaining fans of both Legends continuity and current canon. Revan’s inclusion would bridge the old with the new and deepen current Star Wars lore with a complicated character and a relatively unexplored era.

Revan’s duality is a saga unto itself, and the stage could be set for new stories that would only enrich the current canon.

5) A Live-Action Disney+ Series

Revan Star Wars

The most ambitious way to reintroduce Revan would be a live-action, gritty, and high-stakes series in the same vein as Star Wars: Andor, set in the Old Republic, thousands of years before the Skywalker Saga. The serialized format would allow for a grand, cinematic retelling of his entire arc over multiple seasons, from his rise as a Jedi to his fall and redemption. A show could explore the philosophy of the Jedi and Sith of that era, similar to how Star Wars: The Acolyte has only just begun to touch upon the High Republic era.

A live-action series would also have the budget, scale, and means to bring the epic battles and diverse planets of the Old Republic era to life. It could be a perfect gateway for new audiences, introducing them to a period of galactic history that is relatively unexplored. The mystery surrounding Revan’s mask and true identity alone would make for a suspenseful season, culminating in a season finale reveal.

4) A Comic Book Run

Revan Star Wars

A long-running comic book series could delve deeply into the nuances of Revan’s character without the constraints of a digital/film medium. This approach would give creators the freedom to extensively explore Revan’s internal conflicts and philosophical battles.

This format would also provide the opportunity to expand on the wider context of the Jedi-Sith War and the Mandalorian Wars, around which Revan’s story revolves. The overall story could be told from multiple perspectives, including Revan’s companions and enemies (or even his wife). A detailed comic (or even comic miniseries) would be the perfect way to satisfy longtime fans who crave more intricate details of his life and introduce new fans to a fascinating character.

3) A Cameo or Reference in a Future Project

A subtle and effective way to re-canonize Revan is through a carefully placed cameo or a mention in a future film or series. For instance, a Jedi could be in the archives studying an ancient holocron that speaks of a legendary warrior who wielded both the light and dark sides of the Force. This sort of Easter egg would officially establish his existence without requiring the massive commitment of a full-length feature or streaming series.

Such a reference would create a sense of mystery and intrigue, leaving fans who are unfamiliar with Revan to wonder exactly who the warrior was while also satisfying fans of Legends who know and love the character.  It would be a nod to the fans who remember his story while also setting the stage for possible future stories without fully committing (yet).

2) A Video Game

Darth Revan

Instead of a simple remaster or update to Knights of the Old Republic, a new video game could explore a different chapter of Revan’s life, perhaps set after the events of the original game. A new story could follow him on a new quest or mission, picking up where his Legends journey left off. This would honor the character’s origins in gaming while moving his story forward.

Star Wars: Fallen Order and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor are perfect examples of canonical modern video games that have introduced new characters like Cal Kestis to Star Wars lore. Now, Cal is one of the most popular characters in the fandom, with many people calling for his inclusion in live-action. Something like Fallen Order, but focusing on Revan and his era would give the game a richer and expansive world with more advanced gameplay. This would be a perfect way to bring Revan back to the medium he was born in.

1) A New Publishing Initiative

Star Wars committed to a massive and sprawling project when they began The High Republic publishing initiative. Spread over novels for all ages, comics, and manga, the initiative opened up a whole new world set hundreds of years before the Skywalker Saga, and did so with great success. Now that the High Republic publishing initiative has come to an end, it would be a perfect opportunity to begin an Old Republic initiative.

In the same way that Avar Kriss is the center of the interconnected events that occur during the High Republic, Revan could be that central pillar for the Old Republic. His military genius and unique approach to the Force could be properly fleshed out over the course of the initiative, ultimately showcasing how his legacy subtly influenced Jedi philosophy in the centuries that followed. This would allow for Revan to be woven into the new canon gradually and organically, making his return feel like a natural progression.
