Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 Likely Delivering Long Awaited Character Debut

After the massive box office success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Nintendo had fans on the edge of their seats for any news on a possible sequel. Last week, fans got their wish with the reveal of the Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which was quite the surprise. That said, it might not be the biggest surprise in store for fans, and if this latest information is true, the fans could finally see the long-awaited film debut of a Super Mario favorite.

The latest reveal is courtesy of a toy from the Super Mario Galaxy Movie that made its way online (via @therealcineor). The photo of the toy revealed Bowser Jr (who is the son of the series’ big bad Bowser), which is a pretty big reveal, and it feels legitimate thanks to it being quickly taken down. The kicker here is that the removal request was made by NBC Universal, so if there was any doubt about it being real, that’s likely changed.

Bowser Jr’s Big Screen Debut

This makes a lot of sense for those who played Super Mario Galaxy, as Bowser Jr. shows up multiple times throughout the game as a boss. Defeating him moves you through the story but also nets you a Grand Star, and that eventually leads to a battle against Bowser Jr’s airship, where he is holding Princess Peach.

With the film using Super Mario Galaxy as a foundation, fans were hoping to see Bowser Jr. involved in some way, and with the early toy reveal, it definitely seems like that’s going to happen. Whether the story follows the game so closely remains to be seen, and odds are there will be some things pulled from other games as well.

That would be pretty easy to do, as Bowser Jr. has been featured in multiple Mario games. That includes New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Super Mario Sunshine, New Super Mario Bros. U, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder, just to name a few.

An Expanded Cast

The first Super Mario Bros. Movie found ways to involve a host of other Nintendo characters while also keeping much of the focus on Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Toad, and that will likely be the case for the sequel as well. One of the other big characters pretty much confirmed for the movie given its title is Rosalina, and if she’s in the movie, we’re probably going to see Lumas as well.

That said, we could see some other Mario Galaxy concepts and creatures in the mix, including Honeybees, Star Bunnies, Guppy, King Kaliente, Megaleg, Kingfin, and perhaps even Mecha-Bowser before all is said and done.

Super Mario Galaxy takes place during the Star Festival, which is a once-in-a-century celebration of a comet soaring over the Mushroom Kingdom. Unfortunately the festivities are ruined when Bowser captures the Toads in special crystals and literally lifts Peach’s entire castle and heads to the center of the universe.

Mario is knocked into space during his pursuit, but ends up landing on a mysterious planet and meeting Rosalina and the Lumas. Mario discovers that Bowser has stolen the Comet Observatory’s Power Stars, and if he can get them back, they could chase after Bowser, thus beginning your quest.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is set to hit theaters on April 3, 2026.
