Hollow Knight: Silksong is the highest-rated game of 2025 so far. Suffice to say, developer Team Cherry delivered on the lofty and intense expectations of fans who have been waiting for the sequel since 2017. That said, while Hollow Knight: Silksong does most things very well and is the exact sequel most fans hoped for, there has been some criticism, especially about the game’s difficulty, which many feel has been increased from the first game.
In response to the difficulty complaints, Team Cherry is preparing to release an update that will make the game easier. However, more specific complaints involving difficulty will remain unresolved. For example, within the conversation of difficulty, one of the big talking points among Hollow Knight fans is double contact damage. Now, the first game had double damage, albeit it was less common, and contact damage, but it didn’t really have double contact damage. Rather, contact damage was limited to one mask. To this end, a couple of the top posts on the game’s Reddit page this week have been about this very topic, urging Team Cherry to make changes.
“It Just Doesn’t Make Logical Sense”
“Stunned enemies should not deal double damage on touch,” reads one of these posts, complaining that you take double damage for touching Moorwing even when he is stunned.
“100% agree. I have no issue with the double damage; it just needs to be tweaked,” reads one of the top posts. “Contact damage should not be double, and little minions in a boss fight should not be doing double damage; it just doesn’t make logical sense.”
Another comment adds: “Enemies shouldn’t deal double contact damage. A charging enemy dealing double mask damage, understandable. But just grazing it dealing the same two mask damage, bad.”

Team Cherry may make changes to double contact damage while tweaking the game’s difficulty in the future. Right now, though, there is no word of this. And in the past, Team Cherry has explained the design change as needed to balance Hornet’s better agility and faster healing. The middle ground between the game’s original design and intent and fan demand may end up being removing contact damage from stunned enemies.
“Double damage is a cool mechanic for something threatening, and bosses should have it,” adds a third comment. “Under no circumstances should contact damage be double.”
All of that said, and as always, feel free to leave a comment letting us know what you think, or join the conversation over on the ComicBook Forum? Does Team Cherry need to walk back these changes?
